The foundation stone of this beautiful 'haveli' was laid a century ago, in 1920, by Sardar Anandrao Saheb Phalke Shamsher Jung Bahadur to commemorate the birth of the first direct heir, Sardar Chandrasenrao Phalke, after almost seven generations of adoptions. It was named 'Krishna Mandir' after the Late Sardar Chandrasenrao's mother, Krishna Bai Saheb and the 'Kul Devata (family deity), 'Lord Krishna'.
Built on the family's sprawling estate of thirty acres using only lime, pink Sand and sugar, the building has a ground floor plus one and its construction was completed in 1926. The high ceilings and thick walls add to its grandeur, but the true wonder of this 'haveli' lies in the fact that its load is entirely borne by the arches and its single stone pillars.
Ensconced within the same estate surrounding the 'haveli' is the family 'Dev Ghar '(special worship place) where the very first foundation stone of the family home was laid, as well as the Chaturbhuj or Bihari Mandir, dedicated to Lord Krishna.
